NBC News’s interview with Attorney General Merrick Garland appears to have missed a big opportunity.
While it is possible Hunter Biden did come up in the conversation and the network could air that part of the interview at a later date, the federal investigation into the first son was not mentioned in the Tuesday night segment stretching nearly eight minutes. Much of what did air focused on former President Donald Trump and the Jan. 6 investigation.

President Joe Biden’s son is the focus of a major investigation at the Department of Justice. But many Republicans and conservative-leaning media believe the rest of the media and Big Tech are largely ignoring and even suppressing the story.
Prosecutors are weighing charges for alleged tax violations and for making a false statement in connection to the purchase of a firearm at a time when he should have been blocked from obtaining such a weapon because of a drug addiction. A report from CNN just last week on the latest deliberations said the federal investigation has reached a “critical juncture.” The younger Biden has denied wrongdoing.
Further, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) revealed disclosures this week by “highly credible whistleblowers” with allegations that the FBI’s investigation into Hunter Biden wrongly labeled verified evidence as “disinformation.”
However, Lester Holt’s interview with Garland, which was aggressively advertised by NBC on Monday, appears mainly to have focused on the agency’s other significant investigation, the one examining the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.
Holt asked Garland whether Trump could be prosecuted, a move he said threatened to “tear the country apart.” Garland replied: “Look, we pursue justice without fear or favor. We intend to hold everyone, anyone who was criminally responsible for the events surrounding Jan. 6, for any attempt to interfere with the lawful transfer of power from one administration to another, accountable.”

Trump, who has denied any wrongdoing, has disparaged investigations into his actions surrounding Jan. 6 as political hit jobs. But, as the Washington Post reported Tuesday evening, the DOJ inquiry is getting serious for him, as prosecutors are asking witnesses questions about conversations with the former president.
Beyond Jan. 6, the interview as aired also touched on stopping mass shootings and addressing rising crime rates in the United States. There has been no indication there will be more excerpts from the interview to air at a later date as of press time, though Holt ended the segment by saying what aired was “some” of his conversation with Garland.
