Former Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber dead at 38

Former NFL player Marion Barber was found dead in his apartment by Frisco, Texas, police Wednesday, sources told local media.

The cause of death was not immediately clear. Barber was 38.

“Officers are currently out on a welfare concern, but we are unable to provide any further information at this time,” a Frisco police spokesperson told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The Dallas Cowboys, his former team, confirmed that Barber was found unresponsive, NBC 5 reported.

Frisco is a part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area.

Barber, a running back, played for the University of Minnesota before being drafted by the Cowboys. He played for Dallas from 2005 to 2010 and then for the Chicago Bears for the 2011 season. He retired before the 2012 season.

In the years that followed his retirement, Barber was taken by police to a hospital for a mental health evaluation and faced criminal mischief charges on allegations that he charged and damaged two cars while running in Texas.
