Huma Abedin, a longtime aide to Hillary Clinton, nearly began sobbing at the thought of Clinton carrying her own bags, according to a report published on Thursday.
“Abedin took her duties so seriously … that when she learned that Clinton had once carried her own bag up a flight of stairs in her aide’s absence, Abedin nearly burst into tears,” an unnamed source said for the story in Newsweek.

Abedin began working for Clinton as a White House intern in 1996, the same year that former intern Monica Lewinsky began working for President Bill Clinton. However, her career took a different a trajectory, and Abedin has remained one of Clinton’s most committed devotees. She served as Clinton’s deputy chief of staff at the State Department, and is now a vice chair for Clinton’s presidential campaign.
“She was a very, very religious person — she didn’t smoke, drink or swear, always very polite,” according to the source. “A lot of times, Hillary would snap her fingers and go, ‘Gum.’ And Huma would fetch it.”
Abedin, whose mother lives in Saudi Arabia, is a devout Muslim, and notoriously reserved. She does not speak at public events, and has given only one interview over the course of the 2016 election.

She has also adopted some of Clinton’s problems. The State Department is scheduled to spend the next year reviewing 29,000 pages of emails that Abedin sent or received on a personal address during her time at the department. That process is expected to proceed at a rate of 400 documents per month.

The FBI is expected to interview Clinton and Abedin in the coming months about their use of private email to process classified information at the department. If a court agrees to a discovery request related to the issue by nonprofit group Judicial Watch, both could also be called to provide public testimony about their email.
