Arizona’s largest newspaper publishes striking front page tribute to ‘political giant’ John McCain

The front page of Arizona’s largest newspaper had a striking tribute Sunday to the late Sen. John McCain, who died Saturday due to an aggressive form of brain cancer.

“POLITICAL GIANT, ARIZONA LEGEND,” page one of the Arizona Republic said in large font above a photo of a pensive McCain looking into the distance.

“As an aviator, he survived excruciating captivity. As a statesman, he ascended to presidential nominee. To the end, he fought for his vision of his party and country,” the subhead read for the article written by national politics and issues editor Dan Nowicki.

In a tweet, Nowicki, who covered McCain for 20 years, called the front page Sunday “historic.”

McCain died on Saturday at the age of 81 a little more than a year after he was diagnosed with a brain tumor called a glioblastoma. Funerals and tributes are planned for McCain in both Phoenix and Washington, D.C. Afterward, he will be buried at the cemetery at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., but a date has yet to be set.

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey will not appoint someone to fill McCain’s seat until after his burial, according to a statement from his office.
