American Airlines announced Wednesday that it had agreed to purchase at least 23 of Boeing’s 737 MAX 8 aircraft.
The agreement came after American Airlines exercised several preexisting purchasing options and chose to defer the delivery of 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, according to a report.
Domestic air travel in the nation is still in recovery, and the airline’s new purchase arrives as the omicron variant of COVID-19 continues to stifle the industry.
American will activate at least seven more purchasing options regarding MAX aircraft in 2022, according to a filing.

The Dreamliner planes, which were deferred by American, were slated to be delivered in January 2023.
Deliveries of new aircraft are now scheduled to be completed from 2023 to 2027, and four Dreamliners will arrive in 2023, according to American.
Boeing is paying American penalty fees after it delayed deliveries and said it had experienced $4.5 billion in charges during the fourth quarter, the report noted.
