President Trump suggested that he would allow the government to shut down in September if lawmakers do not fund a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico.
“We have to have borders and we have to have them fast and we need security, we need the wall,” Trump said at a campaign-style rally in Washington, Mich. “That wall has started. We got $1.6 billion. We come up again on Sept. 28 and if we don’t get border security, we’ll have no choice. We’ll close down the country. Because we need border security.”

The president, who spoke at the rally rather than attend the White House Correspondents Association dinner, slammed Democrats in Congress for opposing the wall, a proposal he has said will be a solution to reducing illegal immigration.
The long-term spending deal that Trump signed in March, after several delays, allowed for $1.6 billion to go toward border security. Trump has asked for $25 billion and had threatened not to sign the deal.
