SoberRide gives 215 free taxi trips for July 4

A program to keep drunk drivers off the streets provided 215 free cab rides on the Fourth of July.

The Washington Regional Alcohol Program’s annual SoberRide program offered rides from 10 p.m. Wednesday until 4 a.m. Thursday, giving people cab trips as an alternative to driving home.

The tally beat last year’s 111 rides given, according to the non-profit that offers similar free rides during other holiday periods of the year.

Those who are 21 or older and have had few drinks call a toll-free SoberRide number, then a participating local taxi company picks up the riders and shuttles them home for free as long as the fare doesn’t cost more than $30.
