The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a case about whether authorities can enforce warrants against U.S.-based Internet service providers for information stored on foreign servers.
The high court agreed to hear U.S. v. Microsoft, which involves private electronic communications stored by Microsoft Corp. in Ireland. This case specifically involves warrants based on probable cause.
Microsoft has argued that a federal law enacted in 1986 does not give the government the authority to obtain the overseas communications. But the U.S. government says the company should be required to hand over the communications regardless of where they are stored.
No date for oral argument has yet been set.
