Stewart “seriously considering” Senate run

Prince William County Board member Corey Stewart confirmed Monday rumblings that have been floating around for some time in Virginia politics: Yes, he’s “seriously considering” a run for U.S. Senate in 2012.

Stewart made the comments on TBD’s “NewsTalk with Bruce Depuyt.”

“George Allen is going to run for election to the United States Senate,” Stewart added, saying that he expected Allen to announce sometime in January that he’s going to run for the seat currently held by Democrat Jim Webb, who narrowly defeated Allen in 2006.

Stewart described Allen as a “great governor” of Virginia, but called his Senate record “mediocre.”

“I don’t think most people in Virginia think of him as a great United States senator; they think of him as a great governor,” he said.

“He’s also going to find that times have moved on since he was last there, and that a lot of his base has, frankly, moved on as well, and he’s [going to] have a tough time but, yes, he is absolutely the front-runner,” Stewart said.

Webb, for his part, has not exactly committed to running for a second term in the Senate as of yet.
