Candidate for New York governor and former “Sex in the City” star Cynthia Nixon is asking supporters to donate $4.20 to her campaign after promising to legalize marijuana in New York.
“A lot of people have been donating exactly $4.20 since we announced our plan to legalize weed in NY,” Nixon wrote in a tweet. “Can we get 1,000 people to donate $4.20 a month in the next 24 hours? Let’s try.”

The number $4.20, is in reference to the number associated with marijuana, 420 (pronounced four-twenty). The number is a code-term for marijuana in cannabis culture, and both marijuana smokers and nonsmokers recognize April 20, or 4/20 as a cannabis holiday.
Since announcing her candidacy to challenge incumbent Gov. Andrew Cuomo for the Democratic nomination earlier this year, Nixon has put progressive causes such as public education and LGBT issues at the center of her campaign.
Nixon’s recent announcement to support recreational marijuana legalization comes in stark contrast to Cuomo’s position on the issue, who has previously labeled recreational marijuana as a “gateway drug.”
Cuomo, though an opponent of recreational marijuana, did however sign legislation in 2014 legalizing the use of medical marijuana, and has proposed decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana in public.
