Former House Speaker Paul Ryan will host a fundraising event for Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney in late March as many in her orbit have turned their backs on her.
Ryan’s virtual event will take place March 25, and guests are encouraged to pay a $2,900 suggested donation for attendance, while guests can spend $5,800 for an opportunity to co-host, a spokesperson for Ryan confirmed to the Washington Examiner. Checks are payable to Cheney’s Alexandria, Virginia, office.
The Wyoming Republican has come under fire from colleagues and hometown political authorities alike after she joined nine other GOP lawmakers in voting to move forward with the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump, who was accused of inciting the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection that led to five deaths. On Jan. 19, the Carbon County Republican Party censured her after the group said her actions “concerned” the “entirety of the Wyoming electorate.”
LIZ CHENEY: TRUMP NO LONGER REPUBLICAN PARTY LEADER
At the Conservative Political Action Conference on Sunday, Trump implored the GOP to “get rid” of lawmakers in the House and Senate that voted to move forward with his impeachment proceedings or voted to convict him of the charges. Trump was acquitted of all counts after impeachment managers failed to obtain a two-thirds vote during the trial.
“On Jan. 6, 2021, a violent mob attacked the United States Capitol to obstruct the process of our democracy and stop the counting of presidential electoral votes,” Cheney said at the time of the impeachment vote. “This insurrection caused injury, death, and destruction in the most sacred space in our Republic. Much more will become clear in coming days and weeks, but what we know now is enough. The president of the United States summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack. Everything that followed was his doing.”
“I will vote to impeach the president,” she said.
Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, who traveled to Wyoming shortly after the vote to berate her, also criticized the ranking Republican.

“There’s basically two things that Liz Cheney has done in the United States Congress: frustrate the agenda of President Trump and sell out to the forever war machine,” Gaetz told a crowd of about 1,000 people gathered at the steps of the Wyoming Capitol in late January. “This is my first time in Wyoming. I’ve been here for about an hour, and I feel like I already know the place a lot better than your misguided representative, Liz Cheney.”
Ryan did not immediately respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
