Seinfeld and Toy Story actress Estelle Harris dies at 93

Estelle Harris, best known for her role as George Costanza’s mother on Seinfeld, died Saturday at the age of 93.

The actress’s son, Glen Harris, said she died of natural causes at her home in Palm Desert, California.

“It is with the greatest remorse and sadness to announce that Estelle Harris has passed on this evening at 6:25pm,” Glen told Deadline. “Her kindness, passion, sensitivity, humor, empathy and love were practically unrivaled, and she will be terribly missed by all those who knew her.”

Jason Alexander, who played the role of her son, George, on Seinfeld, called Harris one of his favorite people.

“One of my favorite people has passed – my tv mama, Estelle Harris,” Alexander tweeted. “The joy of playing with her and relishing her glorious laughter was a treat. I adore you, Estelle. Love to your family. Serenity now and always.”

The Seinfeld actress joined the show in its fourth season. Harris became known for her characteristic screeches and sarcastic remarks at the expense of her son, George, and husband, Frank, who was played by Jerry Stiller. She appeared in 27 episodes of Seinfeld.

Harris was born on April 22, 1928, and would have celebrated her 94th birthday in a few weeks. She spent her early childhood years in New York City but would move to Tarentum, Pennsylvania, just outside Pittsburgh, where she got started in acting, discovering her love for comedy on her high school stage.

The actress made her first professional screen appearance later in life as she approached the age of 50 with a small role in the 1977 film Looking Up.

After her nine-season run on Seinfeld ended in 1998, Harris went on to voice Mrs. Potato Head in Disney’s Toy Story series. She also appeared in the popular Disney Channel sitcom The Suite Life of Zack & Cody as the lazy maid at the Tipton Hotel.
