Ward 8 D.C. Councilman says his annual turkey giveaway will happen Wednesday, a day later than originally scheduled after the former mayor couldn’t come up with the cash for the birds.
Barry promised residents in the Southeast ward that he would give away 2,000 turkeys. But on Monday, he was still $9,000 short of the $26,000 he needed to pay for the Thanksgiving centerpieces.
In a news release, Barry said he wasn’t to blame. Instead, he claimed it was Giant’s fault for not spotting him the nine grand.
“First of all, I must apologize to the Ward 8 community for Giant’s failure to provide timely support to the Community. It’s simply pathetic and incomprehensible to me that a multi-billion dollar corporation, like Giant, would take a position that would deprive children, seniors and other adults of food for the Thanksgiving holiday,” Barry said in the release.
Fear not.
“After hours of painstaking negotiation between Barry and the Company [Giant] late last night and early this morning, Giant relinquished, promising to begin to thaw the turkeys today for delivery and distribution by Barry tomorrow morning,” the release said.
The turkeys will be available Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Union Temple church, locate at 1225 W St., SE.
