Coke would have a monopoly in soft-drink conspiracies if it weren’t for the odd fascination your average internet peruser has with Mountain Dew and its supposed effects on sperm count.
Even so, the beverage company remains tethered to a myriad of odd rumors (primarily due, perhaps, to the fact that early iterations of its namesake drink did include cocaine).
But is Coca-Cola actually looking at infusing cannabis in drinks? Users flagged several articles making this claim on Facebook.
Cannabis connoisseurs shouldn’t hold their breath, but the story is true: The ingredient under consideration (cannabidiol, aka CBD) is a non-psychoactive component of the plant. CBD is often used to “treat” a wide variety of ailments including anxiety and insomnia.
“Along with many others in the beverage industry, we are closely watching the growth of non-psychoactive CBD as an ingredient in functional wellness beverages around the world,” a Coca-Cola spokesman told BNN Bloomberg. “The space is evolving quickly. No decisions have been made at this time.”
(Oddly enough, there is evidence that cannabidiol helps treat some forms of childhood epilepsy. But the legality of the component is a bit confused.)
If Coca-Cola does decide to go back to it’s medicinal roots, TWS Fact Check assumes Loretta McCready will be ready.
