| Of the mistakes President Bush has made while in the Oval Office, the one that receives nearly universal condemnation from both sides of the aisle has to be his failure to rein in rampant government spending. For someone who pledged to be a fiscal conservative during his first presidential campaign, Bush has little record to show of it. Sure, Congress controlled the purse strings, but Bush is the leader of his party and its agenda. Projected surpluses turned into deficits, and seven years into his presidency, Bush has come full circle with his call to balance the federal budget.
It’s about time. By the way, what are some of the other pledges he made on the campaign trail that ended up ringing hollow? Changing the tone in Washington? A vow against using our military for nation-building? Does anyone remember any other promises that never panned out? |
