Vice President Joe Biden says the press shouldn’t rush Bernie Sanders out of the race, even though Hillary Clinton has secured enough delegates to win the Democratic nomination.
“Be a little graceful. Let the man have his own pace,” Biden told NBC News on Wednesday, the day after Hillary Clinton won the New Jersey and California primaries by large margins.
After deciding not to enter the race himself, Biden has made favorable comments about Sanders, but never endorsed him or Clinton. Now that the primary is nearly over, Biden will focus his efforts on bolstering the Democratic nominee and helping to foster party unity.
When asked whether Sanders and Clinton could come together and unite going forward, Biden avoided the question and simply said, “I think she will be a great president.”
While Biden is showing support for Clinton, President Obama has yet to formally endorse her or hit the campaign trail on her behalf. Sanders will meet with the president at the White House on Thursday in order to discuss the 2016 race and his future within the party.
