Obamacare signups are surging even as the Republican-controlled Congress has taken formal steps this week to dismantle the healthcare law.
The Obama administration said Wednesday that about 8.8 million Americans signed up for Obamacare through healthcare.gov, which 38 states and the District of Columbia uses to get access for Obamacare. The signups are slightly above the 8.6 million from a year ago.
Of the signups, 2.2 million were new customers and 6.6 million were returning customers as of Dec. 31. Of the returning customers, about 4.4 million shopped for a new plan, an increase from last year’s high.
Open enrollment ends Jan. 31. The Obama administration is pushing for 13.8 million signups.
