Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell pointedly needled his Democratic counterpart Chuck Schumer for voting against his wife, Elaine Chao, for transportation secretary this year.
Schumer was one of just six Democrats to vote against Chao for the post in President Trump’s Cabinet after she sailed through her committee hearings, despite providing little information about the president’s plans to unveil a $1 trillion infrastructure bill.
After Schumer cast his vote, McConnell said he approached him and issued a sarcastic funding threat: “It’s not like anybody in New York needs some transportation money … I was kidding.”
Coming from the top GOP Senate leader, a joke like that still carries an inherent sting. McConnell also shared some unsolicited advice for Schumer and other Democratic leaders, arguing that they are going too far in using delaying tactics to prevent Trump from swiftly filling his Cabinet and getting his administration up and running.
