Levy trial: Penpal says defendant mentioned dead girl

A woman who corresponded with the man accused of killing intern Chandra Levy testified that he mentioned a dead girl in letter to her in 2003.

Ingmar Guandique is on trial in D.C. Superior Court. Prosecutors say he raped and murdered the 24-year-old intern while she was jogging in Rock Creek Park in May 1, 2001.

Maria Mendez, a 48-year-old federal employee from Miami, said Tuesday she corresponded with 10 or 11 inmates since 1991. Guandique, in a California prison for earlier attacks on two women in Rock Creek Park, sent Mendez a letter in 2003 asking to get to know her because he felt a connection with her. A fellow inmate had given Mendez’s contact information to Guandique.

Mendez requested Guandique send a letter about his life and criminal history. His response included the mention of a “dead girl,” but over the course of their communication the Salvadoran immigrant never admitted to killing the unnamed girl.

Mendez testified that she eventually became afraid because of the girl’s mention and wrote him a letter ending communication. Yet six months later, in an Oct. 28, 2003, letter read in court by defense attorney Santha Sonenberg, Mendez wrote: “Write me soon. I miss your little letters.”
