The death toll from the ongoing coronavirus outbreak increased by 73 on Wednesday, its largest single-day jump.
The death toll increased to 563 after Wednesday’s additions, and the Chinese Health Commission said another 3,694 people were confirmed to be infected by the illness. The total number of those affected now sits at more than 28,000.
Of the 73 new deaths, 70 were in Hubei province, which houses the city of Wuhan, where the virus originated.
Also on Wednesday, a case of coronavirus was confirmed in Wisconsin, bringing the total infected in the United States to 12. Other cases in the U.S. include six in California, two in Illinois, and one each in Arizona, Massachusetts, and Washington state.
The outbreak is raising fears of a global pandemic and has killed more people in China than the SARS outbreak of 2002-03.
Last week, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a global public health emergency.
