Donald Trump will spend part of his Fourth of July weekend with Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, driving speculation that the respected conservative governor is under consideration for the vice presidential slot.
“Gov. Pence has accepted an invitation to spend a little time with Mr. Trump this weekend,” Marc Lotter, an aide to the governor, told the Washington Examiner.
“This meeting is very consistent with meetings Mr. Trump is holding with many key party leaders,” he added.
Whether the presumptive Republican presidential nominee intends to meet Pence in the governor’s backyard or elsewhere has yet to be disclosed by the Trump campaign.
Sources familiar with Trump’s short list told CNN on Friday that Pence, as well as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, are being vetted as potential running mates.
Trump has previously said he is likely to choose someone with political experience and, in addition to serving as governor of the Hoosier State, Pence spent six terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Despite previously promising to reveal his running mate at the GOP convention in Cleveland later this month, Trump is reportedly weighing whether to unveil his vice presidential pick sooner in an effort to put a growing number of anti-Trump delegates at ease.
