Comedian Michelle Wolf said it’s “cowardly” of President Trump to skip the White House Correspondents Association dinner Saturday evening.
“It’s nicer to make fun of someone when they’re there,” Wolf, who will be the emcee at Saturday’s annual event, told “CBS This Morning.”
“I think it’s cowardly not to go. The only other person that didn’t go was Reagan when he was shot. And he called in,” she continued. Former President Ronald Reagan missed the annual dinner, which celebrates journalism and the First Amendment, in 1981 due to the injury from an assassination attempt.
While she previously said that she’s thankful he won’t be attending, Wolf told CBS that she would rather make fun of the president to his face.
This will be the second year in a row Trump skipped the annual event. Instead, he hosted a campaign rally in Michigan where he slammed the correspondents’ dinner for being “phony.”
