The PTA Council of Howard County strives to promote parental involvement to better each child?s education, while Community Advisory Council works to advise the School Board and facilitate its activities and programs in the public schools.
How can School Board members best work with the PTA and CAC?
» Diane Butler: “School Board members, as well as the PTA, must make true joint partnerships with parents. The board must also listen to parents. Parents must truly participate in their children?s education.”
» Faenita Dilworth: “I would … collaborate with both groups to be fully aware of their priorities, objectives and initiatives. This would ensure that the three groups were in sync with the [goals,] objectives and mission of each group.”
» Allen Dyer: “The board must operate transparently and open two-way channels of communication. I support a board e-mail list for communication and a Wiki for collaboration with the PTA and CAS.”
» Ellen Flynn Giles: “The CAC and PTACHC bring invaluable perspective to the work of the board. A commitment to dialogue, transparent processes and cooperative engagement is essential in the success of our students.”
» Betsy Grater: “The [School Board?s] … goal of providing the best … education for [Howard?s] children is the same goal that drives the PTA and CAC. … I would welcome their suggestions [on] parent involvement and … the educational process.”
» Janet Siddiqui: “These organizations … can help us by engaging parents and community members to share ideas and solutions with the board and with all the PTAs in the county.”
» Di Zou: “The School Board can encourage and set up weekly meetings between the board, PTA and CAC to discuss current issues in the public schools.”
