George Santos disables comments on his social media posts

Amid allegations of faking his biography, Rep. George Santos (R-NY) blocked comments on his social media posts Saturday morning after officially getting sworn as a congressman.

“The American people voted us into the majority and this morning we elected our Republican speaker. Congratulations #KevinMcCarthy,” he wrote on Twitter, with the comments section disabled.

“I am a YES on the house rules package,” he wrote another tweet blocking comments on Saturday.

Santos came under scrutiny when it came to light that he misrepresented a number of his career achievements and personal life details. The New York Times investigated his various claims including being a “seasoned Wall Street financier and investor” but Citigroup and Goldman Sachs had no record of his employment. He alleged to graduate from Baruch College but the school has no record of his his name. Santos claimed to have an animal rescue group “Friends of Pets United” but the Internal Revenue Service could locate no record of the registered charity. In 2021, Santos had tweeted that 9/11 “claimed my mother’s life” but his mother died in 2016.

In late December, the New York Republican admitted to the New York Post that he had lied about several details about his background. The 34-year-old openly gay lawmaker confessed to never having worked directly with Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, instead saying he worked with a company called Link Bridge that did business with the financial services companies.

“My sins here are embellishing my resume. I’m sorry,” he told the outlet.

“I am not a criminal,” he defended himself. “This [controversy] will not deter me from having good legislative success. I will be effective. I will be good.”

Santos has received numerous calls for his resignation after he admitted to embelling claims about his background involving his education and work history.

On Saturday morning, a group of 150 protesters gathered around his campaign office in Queens to demand his resignation. During the week-long House speaker’s race, Santos was bombarded by reporters when walking to his congressional office asking whether he planned to resign.

Santos amused many social media users watching the House speaker debate by his peculiar interactions on the House floor as the drama on the House floor played out. C-Span cameras regularly captured Santos sitting around the House floor or mingling with fellow members, while pictures shared to social media showed him sharing internet memes with fellow House members.
