National PTA beams up P.G. schools chief

The chief of Prince George’s County schools has been appointed to the National Parent Teacher Association’s board of directors.

Superintendent William Hite’s term will run through 2013. He will work with the other PTA leaders to boost family engagement, direct policy, and determine best practices for PTAs across the country.

“Dr. Hite was at the top of the list because he embodies what we look for and hope for as parents, he understands the needs of families, and knows the importance of fostering the partnership between families and school administration,” said Betsy Landers, National PTA president.

Hite has led Prince George’s County Public Schools, the second-largest district in Maryland, since December 2008; Hite was appointed the deputy superintendent in 2006. And he’s not going anywhere — the PTA gig is an extracurricular activity. (Plus, the National PTA is based in Alexandria.)

Prior to joining the suburban Washington school arena, Hite was an assistant superintendent in Georgia’s Cobb County, as well as a director of middle school instruction and a middle and high school principal in Henrico County, Va.

“It’s truly an honor to be appointed to this position,” Hite said. “I am honored that our contribution will influence and encourage consistent dialogue across the nation between parents and school administrators.”
