A home invasion turned deadly when the homeowner opened fire on a pair pretending to be police officers.
Police were called to a home in Philadelphia at about 10 p.m. on Sunday after someone reported a shooting. A young man returned home when two men approached him, police said. One of the men was armed with a gun and had what appeared to be a police badge around his neck. The two then attempted to force the resident into his home and demanded money.
“They tied his hands with zip ties around his back and threatened to kill him if he made any sudden moves,” Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told 6ABC. “That’s when our victim realized these individuals were not police officers.”

The man freed his hands and grabbed a gun from his pocket, according to local law enforcement. The man fired shot one of the men three times. The other suspect fled the scene, and it is unknown if he was shot.
The wounded suspect was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, officials said. Police took the suspect’s gun as well as the 25-year-old’s weapon. The victim had a license to carry.
Police are still looking for the second suspect in the attempted home robbery.

Philadelphia leaders are currently seeking to increase police funding. City Council leaders pitched a new plan on March 30 to increase Philadelphia’s police budget by $23.7 million. The council’s president and at least four of the council’s 17 members support the proposed plan. The increased funding comes two years after the city froze spending on police in response to the killing of George Floyd.
