Henry Cuellar challenger Cassy Garcia rips Democrat as out to ‘enrich’ himself

AUSTIN, Texas — Republican congressional candidate Cassy Garcia debuted a television ad attacking incumbent Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar for living a lavish lifestyle on the backs of his predominantly Hispanic constituents.

Garcia told the Washington Examiner prior to the ad’s release Tuesday morning that her objective was to contrast the values of each candidate vying for the Texas 28th Congressional District, which spans from the Rio Grande Valley and Laredo on the border up to San Antonio.

“The differences in this race could not be clearer. While I was working my way through school and serving our community, Henry Cuellar was using public office to enrich himself, his family, and his friends — all while South Texas families saw grocery bills, border crossings, and crime skyrocket,” Garcia said in a statement. “Cuellar has been in office since I was in kindergarten — and he needs to go.”

Cuellar was first elected to Congress in 2004, following 14 years in the Texas House of Representatives and a short period as Texas secretary of state. Earlier this year, the FBI raided Cuellar’s Laredo home as part of a federal investigation. Cuellar has maintained his innocence and said the investigation would vindicate him.

The 30-second television ad is the second released by Garcia, a former senior aide for Sen. Ted Cruz. The video is narrated by a woman with a Spanish accent in an attempt to appeal to the majority Latino voter base in the region.

“Henry Cuellar, he used us to enrich himself: private planes, D.C. condos, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in payouts to relatives,” the voice-over states. “Cassy won’t trade stocks in Congress, and she’s not looking to get rich.”

The National Border Patrol Council pulled its endorsement of Cuellar and switched to back Garcia, whose husband is a Border Patrol agent of 26 years.

Cuellar’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
