THE FORMER CAPTAIN OF THE COSTA CONCORDIA RETURNED TO HIS SHIP FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE IT CAPSIZED TWO YEARS AGO ON THE ISLAND OF GIGLIO.
AN ITALIAN COURT ALLOWED FRANCESCO SCHETTINO TO GO ABOARD THE SHIPWRECK AS PART OF A NEW COURT-ORDERED EVIDENCE SEARCH.
SOUNDBITE (Italian) Francesco Schettino, Captain of Costa Concordia:
“I gave indications that will help the experts decide how to divvy up the responsibility. The survey will decree who is responsible. There are others who have already entered plea bargains, admitting guilt, while I have put myself forward to be judged.”
THE CAPTAIN’S LAWYER SAID IT WAS A DIFFICULT EXPERIENCE FOR HIM.
SOUNDBITE (Italian) Domenico Pepe, Schettino’s lawyer:
“It is a very difficult situation for him, but he wanted to show that he doesn’t have anything to fear, because his choices were intended to save as many lives as possible. And he was able to save more than 4,000 lives.”
THE COURT AUTHORIZED THE LATEST SEARCH OF THE VESSEL TO DETERMINE IF ANY FACTORS BEYOND HUMAN ERROR CONTRIBUTED TO THE DISASTER.
THE CONCORDIA SLAMMED INTO A REEF IN JANUARY 20 12 AND CAPSIZED, KILLING 32 PEOPLE.
SCHETTINO IS ON TRIAL FOR MANSLAUGHTER AND OTHER CHARGES.
FIVE OTHER EMPLOYEES ENTERED PLEA BARGAINS, NONE ARE SERVING PRISON TIME.
