Reggie Ray has designed for Diahann Carroll, Maya Angelou, Jennifer Holliday, Richard Roundtree and hundreds of other theatrical stars. Currently, his work is on view in the Ford’s Theatre production of “Jitney” by the late Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson. His costume designs also enhance Wilson’s “King Hedley II,” opening in New York’s Signature Theatre
Feb. 20, starring Washington favorite Linda Gravatt.
“Jitney” is the first Wilson play Ford’s Theatre has mounted. Presented in association with the African Continuum Theatre Company, it is the eighth of the Pittsburgh Cycle, ten plays about the African-American experience during the 20th century. This one, set in the 1970s, is about a company of jitney drivers facing financial disaster because of urban renewal in Pittsburgh’s Hill District.
The esteemed cast of area actors is directed by Jennifer L. Nelson, winner of one Helen Hayes Award and 13 nominations. In addition to Ray, she is supported by an award-winning design team that includes scenic designer Tony Cisek, lighting designer Dan Convey and sound designer Chas Marsh.
