Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards condemned the shooting in Baton Rouge on Sunday that claimed the lives of three police officers and left three more wounded, saying law enforcement agents are “doing everything humanly possible” to keep local people safe and bring any remaining suspects to justice.
“We have to do better,” Edwards said of the tensions between the black community and police that rocked the region before the shooting.
“An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us, and the people who carried out this act, the individuals, they do not represent the people of Baton Rouge or the state of Louisiana, or what’s best about our country,” Edwards said.
The death of Alton Sterling, a black man killed by police officers in an altercation that was caught on video, sparked protests around the country and preceded an attack on law enforcement agents in Dallas earlier this month.
“There simply is no place for more violence,” Edwards said. “That doesn’t help anyone. It doesn’t further the conversation. It doesn’t help any injustice, perceived or real.”
The Louisiana governor said officials “are not going to tolerate” further violence.
