Army veteran injured in Afghanistan begins campaign for Senate in Nevada with moving video

An Army veteran who was badly injured while serving in Afghanistan has launched his campaign for U.S. Senate in Nevada with a moving video highlighting his harrowing experience in the theater of war.

Retired Capt. Sam Brown announced his bid as a member of the Republican Party to unseat Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, a Democrat, in next year’s election, releasing a video focused on pandemic recovery and his service in the military.

“America needs its own recovery. The pandemic hit Nevada harder than any other state in the country,” Brown said in the video released on Wednesday. “But rather than sharing in our sacrifice, our political leaders bicker — they point fingers and jockey for political gain. Where’s the accountability?”

Brown said the coronavirus pandemic “hit Nevada harder than any other state,” causing record unemployment and “massive business closures.”

“Our nation needs leaders who put duty to country first and will fight to protect the Constitution, not destroy it,” Brown wrote on Twitter.

The Army veteran graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 2006 and was deployed to Afghanistan in 2008. Just months into Brown’s service in the country, his vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb that severely wounded him. Brown then began three years of rehabilitation and recovery, according to his campaign website.
