Fairfax County transportation officials want federal funds for a $55 million transit upgrade on Route 1.
The Richmond Highway Public Transportation Initiative would bring improvements to an approximately 9-mile stretch of the highway in southern Fairfax County, between Old Mill Road and North Kings Highway.
The project includes new sidewalks, bus shelters and intersection improvements, along with a new transit center and parking facility, saidMark Canale, a transportation planner.
The project, he said, is “expected to provide better access to transit-oriented facilities, and improve pedestrian access and pedestrian safety.”
Funding sources and a timeline are both uncertain, he said. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will consider Monday whether to green-light applications for about $4.5 million in Federal Transit Administration grants.
