President Trump has reportedly selected Singapore as the venue for his upcoming summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
The neutral territory would allow senior administration officials to let go of previous concerns about the optics of Trump traveling to Kim’s backyard, following the president’s announcement earlier Wednesday that he was no longer considering the Demilitarized Zone separating North and South Korea.
Sources familiar with the planning told CNN that administration officials have been advised to plan for a June meeting between Trump and Kim in Singapore.
A White House official declined to confirm the location, which is supposed to be announced within the next three days, according to a timeline provided by Trump on Wednesday.
The report comes as Trump and his wife, Melania, prepare to welcome home three Americans who were held captive in Pyongyang and released Wednesday morning. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is expected to arrive in Washington around 2 a.m. Thursday with the former captives, who will be greeted by Trump and Melania at Joint Base Andrews.
