Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called for a moment of silence Monday, and said the Las Vegas shooting is a “moment for national mourning and for prayer.”
“What happened in Las Vegas is shocking, it’s tragic and for those affected and their families, it’s devastating,” McConnell said on the Senate floor about the shooting that left 58 dead and hundreds injured. “It’s hard to even imagine their pain. I hope they know we are praying for them now, I hope they will find strength in the love and kindness of those around them in this hour of darkness and pain.”
McConnell did not publicly respond to calls by Democrats to initiate gun control legislation, which has failed to pass Congress after attempts made in recent years.
“Many Americans are still in shock while others have begun to wonder why someone would do something this terrible,” McConnell said. “What is clear now is this is a moment for national mourning and for prayer.”
Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, spoke after McConnell and called the shooting “a tragedy without precedent.”
