Marco Rubio said Wednesday he will support Donald Trump in the general election because the only other choice is to back Hillary Clinton, and warned that Republicans who don’t vote are also supporting Clinton.
“I’m even more scared about [Clinton] being in control of the U.S. government,” Rubio said during an interview with the “Today” show on Wednesday morning. “I think it’s pretty clear that this is the position obviously I didn’t want us to be in. Donald Trump obviously wasn’t my first choice.”
The failed GOP primary candidate reaffirmed that despite his reservations he would continue to support Trump, but did not say whether or not he would hit the trail for Trump in the coming months.
“The only other choice then would be to vote for Hillary Clinton or to abstain, both of which would also be supportive of her,” Rubio stated. “And I have even more policy differences with her.”
“You don’t have a choice here anymore,” Rubio continued. “The choice in Florida is going to be, if you want a legitimate vote, the choice is going to be between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump or abstaining. And if I as a Republican abstain, that is support for her. And I am not going to support Hillary Clinton.”
