Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor reconnects with family in Puerto Rico

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor has established contact with her family in Puerto Rico, days after she lost contact with them in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

The first Supreme Court justice of Hispanic heritage said late last week that she had still not heard from half of her family in the aftermath of the category 4 hurricane.

Supreme Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg confirmed to the Associated Press Tuesday that she has been able to reach most of her family and that they are doing well.

“As you know, the island is suffering a great tragedy right now,” Sotomayor said during an appearance Thursday at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

President Trump announced Tuesday he plans to visit Puerto Rico early next week, and House Speaker Paul Ryan has announced that federal aid will soon be coming to the island.

“They need our help and are going to get our help,” Ryan said Tuesday.
