A 25-year-old District man was sentenced Wednesday to 30 years in prison for a 2009 murder that he later boasted about committing, prosecutors said.
Curtis Bunn was found guilty in November of second-degree murder while armed and gun charges in the slaying of Darren Byas Sr., 38, in Southeast Washington.
Prosecutors said Bunn tried to force his way into a home to buy marijuana, but Byas, who was playing cards and video games with friends, went outside the home to tell him to leave. As Byas walked away, Bunn shot him in the back of the head and continued shooting him 1o more times, authorities said. One of the bullets struck a bystander and another struck a vehicle occupied by two people.
Police said Byas bragged about the shooting in detail and laughed when police confronted him about the death.
