Joy Behar, let us remember, has her own news show on HLN. This is the exchange between Whoopi Goldberg and Behar on “The View” about Black Friday:
As Whoopi points out, Black Friday is called Black Friday because it marks the beginning of the holiday shopping season, during which retailers hope to make profits, getting “in the black,” in an accounting sense. It has been used with that positive connotation since the 1980s, and the word black comes from the color of ink traditionally used by accountants to mark profits. It has absolutely nothing to do with race, and is mostly a positive term. Though I’ve seen reports of the term being used in the ’60s by Philadelphia cops because of the large amount of traffic caused by shopping and the Army-Navy game on that day, the positive meaning of the term has long since eclipsed that one, and it never had anything to do with race. If you are so intent on finding the racism inherent in American society that you must resort to total cultural and vernacular ignorance to find it, I hereby declare that your accusations of racism are rendered moot. Remember that the next time Joy Behar calls a prominent conservative a racist. She has cried wolf one too many times. Or, “white wolf,” if she would prefer.
