Video shows fiery LA traffic collision with car ‘flying in like a missile’

Shocking video shows the moment Thursday afternoon when a speeding Mercedes-Benz shot into a busy Los Angeles-area intersection, leading to a fiery crash that killed five people and injured at least nine more, according to authorities.

Among those who died were a pregnant woman and her infant, said California Highway Patrol spokesman Franco Pepi, according to the Los Angeles Times. CHP is counting the pregnant woman’s unborn child as the fifth fatality.

Nine people were wounded, with eight being hospitalized. Six of those wounded were teenagers, with one suffering major injuries, Pepi said.

Video from what appears to be a gas station in the Windsor Hills area was obtained by local outlet KTLA. The vehicle that sped into the intersection blasted through a red light, and the driver did not appear to try to hit the breaks before it smashed into other vehicles.

The crash was reported at around 1:40 p.m. local time, per the report, and authorities responded to the scene.

“That car came flying in like a missile,” tweeted Fox News reporter Bill Melugin.

An unnamed witness on the scene told the Los Angeles Times, “I was getting out, had got gas. All of a sudden that Mercedes is coming at me on … fire. I didn’t have any time to think about it. It hit my car. I veered, hit the bench on the side.”

Smoke from the crash could reportedly be seen from miles away.

The cause of the crash is currently unknown, though Pepi said investigators believe the driver of the Mercedes, moving “at a high rate of speed,” was responsible for the crash.

The driver has only been identified as a female adult, Pepi said, and she is believed to be among those who have been hospitalized, per the Los Angeles Times.

The crash is under investigation by CHP.
