Va, Senate GOP rolls out 2011 agenda

Virginia Senate Republicans on Tuesday unveiled their legislative agenda for the 2011 General Assembly session, which includes traditional GOP fare like stopping higher taxes and streamlining government – and one item that would end funding for non-state agencies.

“Our Caucus is united in its support of this agenda, and will work together to see it enacted,” said Sen. Thomas Norment, Jr., R-James City.

The goal of ending funding for non-state agencies is notable, however, because Gov. Bob McDonnell has proposed money for charities in his amendments to the state’s biennial budget, including $500,000 to both the Federation of Virginia Food Banks and the Norfolk-based Operation Smile, a group that provides free surgeries to children with cleft lip and other facial deformities.

Other agenda items Senate Republicans rolled out Tuesday include supporting a federal repeal amendment that would allow states to overturn federal law if two-thirds of state legislatures vote to do so.
