A Chinese man was confirmed Tuesday as the first person with a case of the H10N3 strain of bird flu, according to the country’s health authorities.
The Chinese National Health Commission identified the 41-year-old as a resident of Zhenjiang in the country’s Jiangsu province.
He was diagnosed with the virus May 28 after having been hospitalized April 28 with multiple symptoms, including fever, the health commission said, according to Reuters.
“This infection is an accidental cross-species transmission,” the health commission said. “The risk of large-scale transmission is low.”
The strain is relatively less severe than other strains of bird flu, the health commission claimed.

The majority of human cases of infection with bird flu stem from exposure to infected poultry or other contaminated environments, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
