Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez brushed off criticism after she claimed that she and Joe Biden would not be in the same political party in any other country.

Ocasio-Cortez, 30, received backlash from some of her fellow Democrats after she told the New Yorker, “In any other country, Joe Biden and I would not be in the same party, but in America, we are.”

Some questioned Ocasio-Cortez’s criticism of Biden, given that he is the front-runner in the 2020 Democratic primary. Many, including Barack Obama campaign chairman Jon Cooper, reminded Ocasio-Cortez that she and Biden were supposed to be on the “same team.”

The congresswoman responded to the controversy by highlighting that the lines between Republicans and Democrats can be blurred and noted that New Jersey Rep. Jeff Van Drew switched to the Republican Party prior to the House impeachment vote. She also called out Democrats for attending Republican fundraisers.

She tweeted, “Are people actually upset over discussing multiparty systems? The conversation is helpful for understanding difference among Dems. People are acting like a Dem didn’t just join the GOP a few [weeks] ago. Other safe Dems actually fundraise for Republicans. That’s not ‘moderate.’”

Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Biden’s rival, Bernie Sanders, who has trailed the former vice president in most polls in the 2020 campaign season. Sanders said the congresswoman would be a “very, very important” person in his administration if he becomes president.
