Alexandria is offering free parking in all city-owned garages on Friday, the day known in the retail world as Black Friday.
Traditionally one of the biggest shopping days of the year, the day after Thanksgiving marks the time when the season for holiday shopping begins and stores roll out the big sales and steep discounts for shopping fanatics.
Usually shopping malls are the ones that open at the crack of dawn and are inundated with shoppers, but the city says it wants a piece of the action this year and is offering the free parking as “a special incentive for shoppers to visit Old Town to make their holiday purchases.”
In addition, dozens of local merchants are opening early (some as early as 6 a.m.) and offering deep discounts, according to the city.
