President Joe Biden remains optimistic that Virginia Democratic gubernatorial nominee Terry McAuliffe will secure his second nonconsecutive term in the governor’s mansion, despite polls suggesting otherwise.
“I think we’re going to win in Virginia,” Biden told reporters Tuesday in Glasgow, Scotland.
BIDEN’S PRESIDENCY FACES VIRGINIA REFERENDUM
Conceding that McAuliffe is in a closer-than-expected race against Republican nominee Glenn Youngkin, Biden predicted the election’s results will be “very close.” But Biden denied that his low job approval numbers and lack of legislative accomplishments had hampered McAuliffe’s campaign.
“The off-year is always unpredictable,” he said, encouraging “every eligible voter” to cast a ballot. “It’s going to get down to, as you all know, turnout.”
Youngkin, a millionaire businessman and political rookie, has an average 1.7 percentage-point lead on McAuliffe, Virginia’s former governor and the one-time chairman of the Democratic National Committee, according to RealClearPolitics. Biden claimed Virginia over former President Donald Trump a year ago by more than 10 points.
During his 25-minuteslong closing remarks at the United Nations’s 26th climate summit abroad, Biden acknowledged frustration with his and other governments’ environmental inaction.
