Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville warned potential NFL draft picks not to talk about politics when their name gets called in Thursday’s draft.
“Nobody’s looking for an outspoken person,” Tuberville said on the advice he would give incoming NFL players. “We’re too divided as it is.”
“Everybody wants to make an opinion, and that’s fine,” Tuberville said. “But, I think, especially for young people, to get involved in something that maybe they might not understand as much, I think they need to let people that, whatever they do for a living, justify it.”
The Alabama Republican has experience in both politics and sports, having been a longtime Division 1 head football coach before making his bid for the Senate.
NFL LEGEND BRETT FAVRE SLAMS WOKE SPORTS: ‘I WANT TO WATCH THE GAME’
His comments come as athletes in major sports leagues have become more vocal about political issues, though not everyone believes the trend is a good thing for the country or for sports.
“I think both sides, for the most part, want to see it just remain about the sport, not about politics,” NFL player Brett Favre said of politics in sports earlier this month. “At least, that’s my interpretation. I know when I turn on a game, I want to watch the game. I want to watch players play and teams win, lose, come from behind. I want to watch all the, you know, important parts of the game, not what’s going on outside of the game. And I think the general fan feels the same way.”
The sentiment is something that Tuberville seemingly agrees with.

“I’d just like to see our country be more settled down in terms of people getting into politics or in sports and vice versa,” Tuberville said.
