Before altering your appearance, know your surgeon well.
Potential-patients should certainly research their doctors, said cosmetic and aesthetic surgeon, Dr. Lawrence Rosenberg of The Plastic Surgeon Center of Maryland in Baltimore.
“You really want to look for board certifications,” he said. “The American Board of Plastic Surgery is the gold standard. It certifies [a doctor] has passed a rigorous training program, including written and oral exams.”
Membership to national societies like the American Board of Surgery where physicians undergo additional training and commit to ethical and technical standards is also important, Rosenberg said.
Plastic surgeons in the United States performed about 11.5 million cosmetic procedures in 2006, according to the latest survey from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
“We see a spectrum of people from a wide socioeconomic range,” Rosenberg said. “Everyone from professional dancers to mothers, daughters, sisters to your next door neighbor.”
Roughly 10 to 20 percent of Rosenberg?s patients are men who prove less vocal than women about their procedures, Rosenberg said. Men mostly have liposuction performed and fillers injected to decrease wrinkles.
