North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in signed a joint statement Wednesday, and North Korea has agreed to dismantle a missile engine test site and launch pad, according to a new report.
Kim also has agreed to permanently dismantle the North’s main nuclear complex if the U.S. takes corresponding measures.
The two leaders signed the documents in Pyongyang and will announce more details of the joint statement and the results of their summit later in the day, the Associated Press reported.
According to the AP, Moon said during a news conference that Kim has agreed to have international experts watch as the test site and launch pad are permanently dismantled, a step the two attribute towards efforts of total denuclearization of the peninsula.
Both defense chiefs of North and South Korea also signed an agreement that the South Korean government reportedly says aims to reduce military tensions along the border, defuse crises, and prevent accidental clashes.
The AP also reported that the two nations will take a number of steps related to the border, including setting up a joint search effort for bodies of soldiers killed during the Korean War along the border that will first include the removal of land mines and explosives ahead of the first searches next April.
The defense chiefs also agreed that the two nations will also disarm a border village jointly controlled by the countries, create buffer zones along their land and sea borders, withdraw 11 guard posts from the demilitarized zone by December, and establish a no-fly zone above the demarcation line, the AP reported.
In the joint statement released by South Korean government, Kim promised to visit Seoul “in the near future.”
If the visit were to come to fruition, it would be the first time a North Korean leader has visited Seoul since the peninsula was divided in 1945.
The statement released also indicates the North and South will seek to obtain the rights to co-host the 2032 Summer Olympics, as well as cooperate in sports events such as the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Kim and Moon were engaging in a summit in the capital city of North Korea the past two days discussing “opinions on various issues,” according to North Korea’s state media. Moon is in Pyongyang this week for the summit.
