Super Bowl LIV draws second fewest viewers in 11 years despite beating last year’s ratings

The Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers had a larger audience than last year’s big game, but the number of viewers was still down from other recent years.

Sunday’s game drew an average just below 100 million viewers and a 41.7 household rating from Fox’s broadcast, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Those numbers are a slight bump from last year’s Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams, which aired on CBS and saw 98.2 million viewers and a household rating of 41.1.

Both Super Bowl audiences received small bumps when also factoring in additional platforms on which the games could be streamed. However, this is the second straight year that the primary broadcast failed to eclipse the 100 million viewers mark, which comes after the league had nine straight Super Bowls topping that marker.

This year’s big game featured a close match in which the Chiefs overcame a double-digit deficit in the final 7 minutes to win 31-20. The game also featured last year’s MVP Patrick Mahomes, who was named the MVP of the Super Bowl after throwing two touchdowns and rushing for one on his own.
