Full Red Line service to run past 10 p.m. Friday

Red Line trains will run continuously Friday night — one of the first times since the deadly June 22 crash that killed nine and injured more than 70 people on that Metro line.

The transit agency said it can open the full track because federal investigators will not be testing it between the Fort Totten and Takoma stations as they have been each night after 10 p.m. The transit service has had to close the Takoma station at that point and run shuttle buses between stations.

But the 10 p.m. shutdown will resume on Saturday, according to Metro.

The transit system also is girding for heavy crowds that night on the Green Line for the Billy Joel and Elton John concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Washington Nationals Park. Metro plans to run more eight-car trains than usual and run eight-car shuttle trains at the end of the concert to the Mt. Vernon Sq/7th St. Convention Center Metrorail station. Still, Metro warns riders to expect to wait an hour or more after it ends.
