GOP Sen. Dan Sullivan says it’s not ‘politically wise’ for Trump to fire Jeff Sessions

Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, believes Attorney General Jeff Sessions should remain the country’s top law enforcement officer after the 2018 midterm elections.

“As I mentioned, he can do it,” Sullivan said during an interview with NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” referring to how Trump has the constitutional authority to dismiss Sessions.

“Would it be politically wise? I don’t think so. And I support Jeff Sessions and the job he’s doing right now,” Sullivan continued.

President Trump would not comment Thursday in an interview with Bloomberg on whether Sessions would continue to be at the helm of the Justice Department following November’s elections.

The former senator from Alabama may also be losing the backing of key members of Congress. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., told reporters Wednesday that the president deserved an attorney general he has “faith in.”

Trump’s confidence in Sessions has eroded since the attorney general recused himself in March 2017 from overseeing special counsel Robert Mueller’s federal Russia investigation. Trump reportedly believes Sessions’ decision to do so has opened him up to unnecessary legal jeopardy because another attorney general would have stopped Mueller’s so-called “witch hunt.” Mueller’s probe is now under the supervision of another Trump appointee, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
